New engine options for the 2021 Mazda3
The Mazda3 was already an impressive machine in 2020 with a 2.5-liter engine that could really output some power, but for 2021 Mazda has some big surprises in mind with not one but two additional engine options. If you want to learn all about the new engine options for the 2021 Mazda3, then just keep reading.
2021 Mazda3 engine lineup
There are three engine options available for the 2021 Mazda3 in all. In 2020, you had just the 2.5-liter engine option to choose from, but now you get a 2.0-liter beneath that and a 2.5-liter turbo above that. See the specs below:
Torque: 150 Pound-Feet
Torque: 186 Pound-Feet
Torque: 310 Pound-Feet
How efficient are the new powertrains for the 2021 Mazda3?
You may have noticed that we didn’t list any efficiency numbers up there. You can expect similar efficiency for the 2.5-liter powerplant as the 2019 model, but we are still early yet with the release date still months out. These 2021 Mazda3 models have yet to be officially tested to get their respective city and highway mpg numbers.
These are still Mazda models, so you can expect good numbers out of these engines with the 2.0-liter likely providing additional efficiency over the 2.5-liter, and the 2.5-liter turbo getting less efficiency than the regular 2.5-liter.
Does the Mazda3 turbo engine provide more power on premium gas?
Those horsepower and torque numbers listed above are what you get when you run the 2.5-liter turbo on regular gas, but it was designed to run on both regular and premium gas, much like other Mazda models equipped with an available turbo like the Mazda6 and the Mazda CX-5.
When you run this engine on premium gas, you actually get a significant power bump with 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. This means there is a wide range of power available for the 2020 Mazda3. The choice between the 2.0-liter engine and the 2.5-liter turbo is a choice of nearly 100 horsepower and more than double the torque.
