The Mazda CX-7 is a crossover that offers seating for five people, a decent amount of cargo space, and a comprehensive set of standard safety features in a distinctive package.
The CX-7 has a surprisingly powerful, fairly frugal, 244-horsepower turbocharged, four-cylinder engine connected to a state-of-the-art six-speed automatic transmission with a Sport-shift feature. It is a sporty-looking and sporty-handling CUV that will haul nearly as much stuff as it does people. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. It comes standard with four-wheel, anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and electronic stability control with traction control.

The CX-7 five-seat crossover is priced between the Tribute and the larger CX-9 crossover in the Mazda lineup. The CX-7 was designed to deliver the utility of a small SUV and the driving experience of a passenger car. Its competitors include the Ford Edge, Toyota Highlander and Nissan Murano in one regard, but the CX-7's sporty nature and wagonlike shape also liken it to the Volkswagen Tiguan and Infiniti EX35.
New for 2011 is an "i" Touring model powered by a 161-horsepower four-cylinder engine. This trim level includes a power adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, leather trim, a rearview camera and a power moonroof.
The normally aspirated (non-turbo) 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is now available on "i" Touring models, and it comes with a five-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The optional turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder carries over from the previous model year.
The CX-7 is comparable in size to other midsize crossovers, though it's relatively narrow and more likely than most to be called a wagon.
The CX-7 seats up to five. The dashboard features double-decker construction, with a large information display at the base of the windshield. Folding down the rear seats provides a nearly flat load floor, and the seatbacks and rear cargo compartment are coated in plastic.
